Gus had his wet-to-dry/tie over sutures removed and the area cleaned. Dr. Peters then closed up more of Gus’s wounds where the skin was able to meet. There is still an open section near the front because there simply wasn’t enough skin to close.
We’re monitoring his sutures, some of the front ones are starting to fail (not unusual with a wound as extensive as Gus’). So they were cleaned really well and filled with honey to keep them clean and stave off infection. We don’t want to remove those sutures yet as they give the skin additional support as it knits back together.
Through it all, Gus remains the same sweet silly boy he always is. He gets so excited and happy when someone stops and gives him attention. He does a little dance and his tail turns into a helicopter!
Gus will continue to stay with our vetting partners at East Orlando Animal Hospital where he can continue to get the around the clock care he needs. Everything is going well, but there is always the risk of infection, especially with an open wound.
In the meantime, the staff at EOAH greets him when they come in for the day, are happy to stop by his kennel to give out ear scratches, and they are enjoying the cooler weather with Gus during his outdoor time.
Thank you all for your donations and support of Gus. His wounds were the most horrific we have ever seen. Without you, Gus would have never gotten this second chance at life. He has so much love to give, our job is to make sure he can spread that love for a very long time.
