What We Do Differently

We put our dogs first, and your donation will directly help save lives.

Poodle and Pooch rescue is run 100% by volunteers.  No one is paid.  We do this work because we love dogs and we want to save lives.  If that sounds like you, please consider joining the Poodle and Pooch team! There are lots of ways you can help!  We specialize in the rescue, rehabilitation, socialization and re-homing of abandoned, neglected, and abused dogs. We provide safe foster homes and necessary veterinary care which often includes much more than vaccinations, spay/neuter and dentals. Our vets perform all necessary diagnostics, procedures, and surgeries to make these dogs well, to repair the damage inflicted by others. Compassion, generosity, and love of our fellow creatures is what brings us all to dog rescue.  We are dedicated to honoring and continually inspiring and nurturing these qualities in our volunteers, donors, and adopters.  We appreciate each other and our donors for bringing the courage, joy, and humor that makes such challenging work possible.

100% Volunteer:

We are 100% volunteer based and have zero paid employees. PPR has a working Board of Directors (4 board members), effective internal controls, and a financial reporting and review process to ensure our money is spent wisely. We structured our organization to operate successfully with a thoughtful division of labor and a team framework for each of our core functions. PPR has 100+ volunteers.

100% Foster Based:

We are a 100% foster-based rescue organization with over 100 foster families that house 1-2 dogs each in their personal residences, primarily single family homes. Not all foster families are active at all times. We have controls in place to ensure our foster families do not crate our dogs for long hours each day without any breaks. We also do thorough vetting on a potential foster family during the foster application process to make certain the residence is appropriate and safe for our dogs. By using foster families, we can ensure that dogs in our care get individualized attention and specialized medical treatment if necessary.

Special Needs & Saving Seniors

We have two primary programs that have been in place since PPR’s inception, our Special Needs Program and our Saving Seniors Program. During the intake process, our dogs are established to be 1. General Population, 2. Special Needs or 3. Seniors. Each program track has unique care tied to it that addresses the type of dog we are rescuing. To address their needs, the dogs going into the Special Needs or Saving Seniors programs require additional diagnostics outside of the standard health check, spay/neuter and vaccinations.

The diagnostics alone increase the overall average vetting cost per dog. Most require serious medical treatments in order to get them to an adoptable state. Because we take in a high percentage of senior and special needs dogs, additional diagnostics are quite common. For special needs or senior dogs these additional diagnostics can include a heart evaluation for murmurs and CHF (congestive heart failure), orthopedic exam especially for luxated hips, checks for medial patella luxation’s and back issues, palpation for mammary tumors, geriatric bloodwork (in addition to the CBC), and radiographs of the heart/abdomen and back, bladder, etc. Depending on our findings, more diagnostic tests may be run.

Our program strategies are simple yet effective and we’ve created a set of standard practices to address the steady stream of special needs and senior dogs coming into PPR:

  • Upon intake we put our special needs and senior dogs on specific exam tracks with additional diagnostics.
  • We have identified experienced foster families that understand the uniqueness of fostering a special needs or senior dog.
  • We have controls in place to ensure the safety of special needs or seniors in homes (e.g. no stairs or pools for vision impaired dogs, arthritic dogs or dogs recovering from broken legs, etc.)

We pride ourselves on always doing the right thing.  With community support and awareness, we are able to save the leftovers every day and we consider it a privilege and an honor to do so.
