Save the Leftovers – Gertie

Neglected, abandoned and left to fend for herself on the streets, Gertie had a large, ruptured mammary mass, a terrible skin infection and she was loaded with parasites. We rushed her to our vet where it was determined that she needed a blood transfusion. Full of cancer, the mass had taken its toll on her blood vessels and was so large that it was going to take two surgeries to completely remove.

Her first surgery was a radical mastectomy, a lymph node removal and a spay. Closing the wound was challenging due to the size of the tumors. It was touch and go for awhile after her surgery because her body wasn’t producing enough red blood cells, but we successfully were able to get that under control and allowed her time to heal for about 6 weeks. Then we did the second surgery to remove the remaining tumors. Gertie’s pathology report showed that she was clear of cancer. This was the news we had all been eagerly waiting to hear!

Had Gertie had the simple spay surgery as a young pup, she would have had less than a 1% chance of developing these mammary masses. A less than 1% chance!! So easily prevented!! Because of negligence, she suffered unnecessarily and nearly didn’t make it. We see this time and time again and we’ll never be able to accept the many excuses of why people don’t spay or neuter their pets. Gertie came to us in horrific shape, now she’s living her best life with her forever person. Never again will she have to worry about being abandoned and left to fend for herself.
