At the beginning of last month, we received a plea from Orange County Animal Services. Molly was a senior and in desperate need of immediate and intense medical care.
Within the day, one of our transport volunteers picked up Molly and drove her directly to our vetting partner, Chuluota Veterinary Hospital. She was triaged and given a full exam. We had blood tests run, skin scrapes done, medication administered, the open wound on her nose was treated, and she was made comfortable.
She stayed under observation of their medical staff. She was on oral antibiotics, vitamin and iron supplement, high calorie soft food, pain meds, Cushings medication (based on her liver levels), eye drops for infection, eye lube for dry eye, ear flush for infection, and antibiotic ointment for her nose.
She was improving and becoming more alert, but then she relapsed. She stopped eating, her skin flared up again, and she lost a pound in about a week. We ran more tests, changed her antibiotics, and did a skin biopsy.
She was finally cleared to go to a foster home. Her foster mom had a medication schedule of one pill a day for her Cushings, twice daily vitamins, oral antibiotics, steroids, allergy medicine, eye drops, ear flush, and nose ointment, three times a day administering eye lube, and four full meals a day.
We also made an appointment at Affiliated Veterinary Specialists – Orlando for her to see a dermatologist. More tests were run, fungal and bacteria scrapes were taken for in-house growth, and additional biopsies were taken. A change in her medication was made where we stopped her Cushings meds, changed her antibiotics, and added a medicated bath every other day.
She’s already improved so much since coming to her foster home and she has been a champ with all the vet visits, testing, and multiple medicine dosings.
We tell you all this because this is the kind of vetting we give when we take on senior and special needs dogs. Molly had been with us a month and she’s only halfway done. She still needs to gain weight, add muscle mass, have a dental, get two large growths removed, and be spayed.
It’s because of our generous supporters that we are able to change this girl’s life and give her the one she deserves. Welcome to the PPR family Molly!
