Mercedes has a long history of volunteering for causes that are important to her. She’s been on the PPR team since 2018 and currently serves as the leader of our Events Team, running a variety of events with great help from experienced events volunteers. In her tenure with PPR she’s done a little bit of everything…from transporting dogs and photographing dogs to writing emails to donors. Along the way, she has also fostered several dogs.

“My favorite part of volunteering at PPR is the opportunity to try different things – there are so many ways to contribute to the mission of saving dogs in need. Whatever your skills are – even sewing and writing – there is a way to help! In my first eye-opening year with PPR I learned just how much goes into rescue work: how many people, how many hours, how many duties, how many emails, how much money, how much heart it takes to get these dogs into safe, loving homes…and how tremendous the need is.

I don’t have any pets of my own right now, which allows me to foster some of the dogs who need to be ‘only dogs’ until they find their perfect ‘only dog’ home. I adopted a poodle from PPR in 2011 – an older breeder dog who was partially blind, totally deaf and absolutely perfect. She gave me so much.

PPR volunteers are special! I’ve had the opportunity to meet many strong, smart, compassionate and determined women. The volunteers at PPR support and encourage each other. Rescue work is emotionally demanding – it’s good to have a (human) shoulder to lean on too!” – Mercedes B.
