Body Language of Fear in Dogs

We all know dogs are so expressive. You probably know when your dog is happy, sad or nervous based on their body language. Dog body language is an intricate and refined system of nonverbal communication that we can learn to recognize and interpret. Once you learn how to “read” a dog’s postures and signals, you’ll better understand their feelings and motivations and be better able to predict what they are likely to do.

This poster from Dr. Sophia Yin illustrates how a dog may use their body to signal they are afraid. Paying close attention to your dog and reading these signals can help you react appropriately, which could mean removing fear triggers from the situation or helping your dog manage and work through their fears. This way you and your dog can interact with greater enjoyment and safety.
