Know the Signs of Heat Stroke

Holy smokes, Florida… IT’S HOT OUT THERE.

Did you know that just a small increase in a dog’s body temperature is all it takes for heat stroke to kick in? Dogs don’t tolerate high temperatures as well as humans. They only have sweat glands in their feet and around their nose, so they’re less efficient at cooling themselves down. Is your dog panting excessively, and restless? These are the early signs of heat stroke. Other symptoms include rapid breathing, barking or whining, excessive thirst, excessive drooling and increased heartbeat.

HOW TO KEEP YOUR DOG COOL ON HOT DAYS…

Restrict exercise

Never leave your dog in a car

Ensure drinking water and a cool, shaded spot is always available

Walk early in the morning or later in the evening

Spray with cool water

IF YOU BELIEVE YOUR DOG IS EXPERIENCING HEAT STROKE…

Move somewhere cool

Offer small amounts of tepid water

Soak the hair coat with cool (but never, ever cold) running water

Place in the breeze of a fan

Contact your vet or an emergency clinic ASAP

Heat stroke in dogs can be fatal in as little as 15 minutes. Please take precautions to protect your pet this summer!
